DYSCALCULIA TESTING

Dyscalculia Testing

Dyscalculia is a specific learning disability that affects a person’s ability to understand numbers and math-related concepts. It’s sometimes referred to as “math dyslexia” due to the significant difficulties in grasping basic arithmetic, despite normal intelligence in other areas. Research estimates that between 3% and 7% of school-aged children have dyscalculia, which can hinder their academic performance and even daily tasks involving numbers.

Global Education Testing provides comprehensive assessments to diagnose dyscalculia. Our certified educational psychologists use specialized tests that focus on mathematical reasoning, number sense, and problem-solving abilities. Our detailed reports will provide individualized learning plans (ILP) and recommend accommodations that ensure students receive the support they need in school.

Can Schools test for Dyscalculia
Is a School Screening Enough?

School screening alone is often not enough to fully diagnose dyscalculia. While it can identify students who are struggling with math, these screenings may overlook the specific cognitive challenges that dyscalculia presents. A formal assessment by an educational psychologist or specialist is necessary to understand the root cause of the difficulties. While many schools may be familiar with Dyslexia, they are often unaware of the signs of Dyscalculia.

Comprehensive Assessments

Comprehensive testing conducted by our highly experienced Educational Psychologists delves far deeper than basic math skills, offering a thorough evaluation of a student’s number sense, working memory, and cognitive processing abilities. This detailed assessment ensures that each student receives the tailored interventions they need to thrive academically. Without undergoing this evaluation, the signs of dyscalculia may remain overlooked.

Extra Time in Exams with a Dyscalculia Diagnosis
Extra Time in Exams

Only a qualified educational psychologist from a health system comparable to the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, or New Zealand can provide the depth, scope, and detail needed for a diagnosis that external examination boards take seriously. Our assessments are critical in unlocking maximum accommodations, such as the maximum extended time for exams, which can make a world of difference to your child’s academic success.

The power of an accurate diagnosis

GLOBAL EDUCATION TESTING

An accurate diagnosis of dyscalculia isn’t just about identifying your child’s math difficulties, it’s the first step toward creating a tailored education plan that can transform their learning experience. Once we’ve pinpointed your child’s specific challenges with numbers and calculations, we work with you and their school to develop an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) that addresses their unique needs while building on their strengths.

At Global Education Testing, we provide comprehensive reports that schools can use to implement necessary accommodations. Whether it’s extra time for math-related tasks, specialized teaching methods, or access to calculators and other assistive technology, our goal is to ensure your child gets the support they need to thrive academically.

How to Get Started

If you’ve noticed your child struggling with math, counting, or understanding number concepts, don’t wait to take action. Early intervention is key to helping children with dyscalculia gain confidence and improve their academic performance. Our thorough dyscalculia testing will give you the clarity you need and provide a clear path to better supporting your child’s education.

What Does a Dyscalculia Assessment Involve?

A dyscalculia assessment involves a comprehensive evaluation of a person’s mathematical abilities and cognitive functioning to diagnose math learning difficulties. The process begins with an initial consultation and developmental history, where information about educational background, concentration, and math anxiety is gathered. Parents or caregivers may also be involved if the assessment is for a child.

During the assessment, our Tier 1 educational psychologists use standardized tests that assess various areas such as numerical operations, math fluency, working memory, and problem-solving skills. These tests often involve both written math problems and interactive tasks using objects like coins or cubes to see how the brain processes mathematical information. It’s designed to be a confidence-boosting experience, not a traditional math exam.

Once the testing is completed, the evaluator will analyze the results and compile a detailed report. This report will offer personalized recommendations for educational support and accommodations, such as extra time for math tasks, access to calculators, or specialized teaching strategies. The entire process usually takes several hours spread over one or more sessions

Dyscalculia Test Results

After completing a comprehensive dyscalculia assessment with our Educational Psychologists, parents receive a thorough report that outlines their child’s mathematical strengths and challenges.

The report covers all areas such as number sense, math fluency, problem-solving skills, and cognitive processing abilities related to math tasks. The goal is to deliver a clear diagnosis and provide specific recommendations for targeted interventions.

As well as addressing dyscalculia, the report may explore other co-occurring conditions like ADHD or dyslexia, which can often accompany difficulties with math.

Once the diagnosis is made, an Individual Learning Plan (ILP) is created. This personalized plan includes specific accommodations like extra time during math exams, access to calculators, or individualized instruction tailored to their unique needs.

Unlike basic classroom accommodations, the ILP is developed in close collaboration with educational psychologists, teachers, and parents, ensuring a fully customized plan. These accommodations, such as additional time in exams, are important for helping children manage the pace of test-taking and reduce anxiety.

The ILP is regularly reviewed and updated based on the child’s progress.
