ANXIETY Testing

Anxiety is a normal feeling that people experience in response to usual stressful situations. However, some young people experience ongoing anxiety that persists when there isn’t a stressful situation. Seeing a loved one struggle through school with anxiety can be frustrating. Maybe you don’t understand why they’re acting the way they or you wish they could just snap out of it. It’s important to remember that your children aren’t doing this for attention, it’s a very real and complicated disorder.

Anxiety disorders are the most common emotional disorders amongst adolescents. According to the World Health Organization, 3.6% of 10-14-year-olds and 4.6% of 15-19 year-olds experience an anxiety disorder.

Anxiety and Exams

It’s normal for young people to have anxiety around exams, however, if your child has ongoing anxiety then periods of stress around exams and expectations exacerbate an already difficult situation. That’s why, with the help of our Clinical and Educational Psychologists we can unlock specific school ‘accommodations’ including extra time in exams. Schools tend not to advocate for extra time in exams because of Anxiety and you may even find them a little dismissive of the situation.

Global Education Testing advocates on behalf of your child. We ensure that their anxiety is officially recognized as a legitimate barrier to their exam performance. Our Clinical and Educational Psychologists thoroughly assess the impact of anxiety on your child’s academic abilities and work closely with schools and exam boards to secure accommodations like extra time, separate testing environments, or additional breaks during exams.

These adjustments can make a significant difference in helping your child manage their anxiety, ensuring they have a fair opportunity to perform to the best of their abilities. Global Education Testing bridges the gap between parents and schools, providing the necessary official, irrefutable documentation, and expert recommendations to ensure that your child’s needs are fully understood and addressed.

Signs Your Child is Suffering from Anxiety

Common signs of anxiety include difficulty concentrating, feeling restless or on edge, irritability, muscle tension, and disturbances in sleep. For children and young adults, these symptoms can manifest as academic struggles, social withdrawal, and noticeable behavioral changes. Early recognition of these signs is crucial for providing the necessary support and interventions to manage anxiety effectively.

Anxiety Screening for Young People
Can a School Diagnose Anxiety?

Schools cannot officially diagnose Anxiety or Stress. While teachers and school staff can identify behavioral signs that may suggest a student has an Anxiety Disorder, the diagnosis must be made by a qualified healthcare professional, such as our Educational Psychologists. Schools can refer students for our evaluations but they do not have the authority to make a diagnosis – or secure the maximum extra time and other school accommodations.

Comprehensive Assessments

At Global Education Testing, we go beyond surface-level screenings to provide a comprehensive and accurate diagnosis. Our Anxiety, Stress and Emotional testing offers the clarity and insight that parents are searching for, helping you understand the full scope of your child’s educational challenges. This isn’t just about labeling a problem, it’s about ensuring that your child receives the full range of support in the classroom and in examinations.

Extra Exam Time for Anxiety and Stress
Extra Time in Exams

Only a qualified educational psychologist from a health system comparable to the UK, USA, Canada, Australia, Ireland, or New Zealand can provide the depth, scope, and detail needed for a diagnosis that external examination boards take seriously. Our assessments are critical in unlocking maximum accommodations, such as the maximum extended time for exams, which can make a world of difference to your child’s academic success.

How Global Education Testing Can Help

At Global Education Testing, we offer specialized assessments to identify anxiety in students. We utilize validated tests such as the Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7-item (GAD-7) and the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) to assess the severity of anxiety and create tailored reports that help schools and families understand the support needed. Our comprehensive evaluation helps educators and parents implement strategies that foster a supportive learning environment.

The Testing Process

Anxiety testing begins with gathering a complete history, including medical, emotional, and academic backgrounds. The testing itself involves validated tools like the GAD-7 and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale, which assess the frequency and intensity of anxiety-related behaviors. For students, these evaluations are designed to be non-invasive and tailored to their specific needs.

Getting Started

The first step in addressing anxiety is reaching out. At Global Education Testing, we ensure a smooth process from the initial consultation through to delivering the results. Contact Us to learn more.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and Anxiety

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often experience heightened anxiety, which may manifest in repetitive behaviors, resistance to changes, or intense fears of specific situations. Sensory overload can also be a significant trigger. We use specialized tools, like the Anxiety Scale for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASC-ASD), to tailor our approach, ensuring that the anxiety in ASD children is properly addressed.

It is important to note that while these disorders can be co-occurring, it is not always the case and often, a standalone diagnosis of Anxiety is made.

Accommodations in Schools

Once an anxiety or ASD-related diagnosis is made, accommodations can greatly improve a student’s experience at school. These include:

  • Extra time for tests and assignments
  • Reduced sensory distractions in the classroom
  • Structured routines to reduce uncertainty and anxiety triggers
  • Access to a quiet space for calming down during overwhelming situations

These accommodations ensure that students not only perform better academically but also feel more secure in their school environment.

Anxiety Test Results

At Global Education Testing, our official reports serve as critical documentation to secure the maximum accommodations available for students experiencing anxiety and related disorders. These reports provide irrefutable evidence that can unlock a range of adjustments, such as extended time on exams, modified class participation requirements, or access to quiet spaces for test-taking.

By documenting specific challenges, including those stemming from anxiety or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), schools can develop tailored Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) or 504 Plans that ensure students can fully participate in the curriculum alongside their peers.

Our reports go beyond merely identifying the presence of anxiety; they offer detailed insights that help educators understand the nature of the condition and how it affects the student’s academic performance. This can include observations about how anxiety impacts concentration, task completion, or classroom participation. For students with ASD, accommodations like reducing sensory stimuli or allowing for routine adjustments are common and can be instrumental in alleviating anxiety and improving school performance.

By using this robust evidence, parents and educators can advocate effectively for adjustments such as extra time during exams, alternative assessment methods, or flexible deadlines, all of which are proven strategies to reduce anxiety in academic settings. These accommodations not only help students manage their mental health but also empower them to thrive academically and socially, minimizing the barriers that anxiety might create in their daily lives.
