Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

Autism Spectrum Disorder Testing

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) affects how individuals interact with others, communicate, and experience the world. Signs of autism often appear by age 2, and these can include delayed language skills, repetitive behaviors, and difficulty in social interactions. Boys are four times more likely to be diagnosed than girls, and the prevalence is increasing, with estimates showing 1 in 36 children diagnosed with ASD.

Global Education Testing offers comprehensive ASD testing services, designed to provide clarity and support to families. Our testing evaluates developmental milestones and behavioral patterns using gold-standard tools like the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS-2) and the Childhood Autism Rating Scale. With a detailed evaluation, we provide families with actionable insights that help in accessing educational accommodations (including significant extra time in exams) and understanding their child’s unique needs.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often presents through various signs and symptoms, which can include challenges in social interactions, such as avoiding eye contact or not responding when called by name. Repetitive behaviors or fixations on specific interests are also common. Many children with ASD experience delays in language development, with some being non-verbal, and sensory sensitivities can lead to discomfort with loud noises or certain textures. Early detection plays a crucial role, as it enables families to pursue interventions that can significantly improve long-term outcomes.

Can a School Diagnose ASD?

Schools cannot diagnose Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). While schools can observe behaviors and identify students who may benefit from an evaluation, a formal diagnosis must be made by a medical professional such as a psychologist, psychiatrist, or developmental pediatrician. Schools may refer students for evaluation and provide support through individualized education plans (IEPs), but the diagnostic process itself requires specialized clinical tools and expertise beyond what schools can offer.

Our testing process is straightforward. It starts with an initial consultation to gather background information, followed by structured assessments using behavioral observation and developmental questionnaires. Depending on the child’s age, cognitive abilities, and behavior, tools like the ADOS-2 are employed. The results are compiled into a comprehensive report, which is shared with parents, and recommendations are provided for  school accommodations.

Extra Time in Exams

The outcome of our testing reports can directly inform school accommodations such as extra time on exams, preferential seating and visual communication aids like the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). These accommodations allow students to thrive academically, despite the challenges they may face. Schools often use the results to create individualized education plans (IEPs) that specify tailored support, including behavior management strategies and organizational aids like checklists or timers.

GLOBAL EDUCATION TESTING

Autism Spectrum Disorder often shows early in a child’s development through noticeable signs and behaviors. These can include difficulties with social interactions, such as not making eye contact or not responding when their name is called. Children with ASD may also engage in repetitive behaviors or have intense interests in specific activities or subjects. Delays in language development are common, with some remaining non-verbal, while others may have challenges with sensory sensitivities, such as being uncomfortable with loud sounds or certain textures. Early identification of ASD is essential, as it allows families to start interventions that support communication, behavior, and overall developmental progress.

ASD Signs

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) presents through various signs and symptoms, which typically manifest early in a child’s development. These symptoms often include difficulty in social interactions, such as avoiding eye contact or not responding to their name. Many children with ASD also display repetitive behaviors or intense interests in specific topics or activities. Language development can be delayed, with some children remaining non-verbal, while others may struggle with sensory sensitivities, such as discomfort with loud noises or certain textures. Early detection of ASD is crucial, as it enables families to pursue interventions that can improve communication, behavior and overall outcomes over time.

How to Get Started

Our psychologists provide detailed reports that schools can use to apply for these accommodations, ensuring that students with ASD are given the resources they need to succeed. These reports can be vital when establishing an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan, ensuring legal protections and support for the student under educational disability laws like the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).

ASD Test Results

Once a child is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, setting up the right support is vital for their development. At Global Education Testing, our first step is working closely with parents to develop a treatment plan tailored to the child’s specific needs.

This may involve coordinating therapies like speech and language therapy, behavioral interventions such as Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), and occupational therapy to address sensory sensitivities. For school-aged children, we collaborate with parents and educational institutions to create an Individualized Learning Plan (ILP), ensuring the child receives the necessary support in their academic environment.

In addition to therapy, we help families explore educational accommodations, such as extra time on exams, preferential seating, and the use of visual communication tools. We also assist parents in accessing social services, including respite care and support groups, which provide critical resources for navigating the challenges of ASD.
