Psychoeducational and Neurodevelopmental Assessments

RAADS-R / RAADS-14

RAADS-R & RAADS-14 Assessment

The Ritvo Autism Asperger Diagnostic Scale, Revised, is an 80-item self-report measure of autistic traits across social relatedness, language, sensory-motor function and circumscribed interests. The RAADS-14 is its abbreviated screening form.

Both are administered within the Global Education Testing Gold Standard battery where autism is suspected or considered.

The RAADS-R identifies autistic traits in students who have been missed, and it is designed for exactly the population that reaches assessment late: students with intact language and strong cognitive ability who have compensated their way through school.

Global Education Testing administers the RAADS-R as the entry point to autism assessment rather than as the conclusion. An elevated RAADS-R score determines that structured diagnostic interview is warranted, and the DISCO then supplies the developmental evidence a diagnosis requires. This is what separates a defensible autism diagnosis from a questionnaire result.

Why the RAADS-R Is Part of our Gold Standard Battery of Diagnostic Tests

Autism in students who reach adolescence undiagnosed rarely presents the way school staff expect. Language is intact, academic performance is often strong, and social difficulty has been managed through learned strategy rather than avoided.

The RAADS-R was developed specifically for this group. It asks the student directly about internal experience, which is where the traits sit when external presentation has been compensated.

That makes the RAADS-R the instrument most likely to surface a profile nobody at school has identified. Teacher observation captures behaviour. The RAADS-R captures what the student is doing to produce it.

What the RAADS-R Measures

The RAADS-R covers four domains, each scored separately and combined into a total.

Social relatedness examines the experience of interaction, including reading intent, managing reciprocity and the effort required to sustain conversation.

Language examines literal interpretation, difficulty with implication and the processing of figurative or indirect speech.

Sensory-motor function examines responses to sound, light, texture and touch, alongside coordination and motor patterns.

Circumscribed interests examines depth and narrowness of focus, routine, and the response to change and interruption.

The RAADS-14 covers the same territory in fourteen items and is used where a rapid screen is appropriate before the full instrument.

Why a RAADS-R Score Alone Is Not a Diagnosis

Self-report instruments record how a student experiences themselves at the point of completion. Diagnosis under DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 requires evidence that traits were present in early development and that they impair functioning across settings.

The RAADS-R establishes neither, and it is not designed to. Its function is to determine whether full diagnostic assessment is warranted, which it does well.

How the RAADS-R Integrates with the Rest of the Battery

The RAADS-R sits at the front of the autism pathway, and every instrument that follows builds on what it surfaces.

The DISCO is the structured clinical interview conducted with a parent or primary informant, covering developmental history from infancy across social interaction, communication, repetitive behaviour and sensory response. This is where the early-onset criterion is established and where traits masked by compensation become visible in the developmental record.

The WISC-V or WAIS-IV establishes the cognitive profile. Uneven index scores are common in autistic students, and the pattern shapes both the diagnostic picture and the recommendations that follow.

The WIAT-III establishes whether academic attainment matches ability, which identifies co-occurring specific learning disorders. These are frequently present and routinely missed once an autism diagnosis is made.

The MOXO Continuous Performance Test, the SNAP-IV and the Conners 3 address attention. Autism and ADHD co-occur substantially, and a report that identifies one without examining the other leaves the student partially supported.

Why the RAADS-R Matters for Students Who Have Been Overlooked

Students who mask effectively are identified late or not at all. The presentation that prompts referral in primary school is absent, and what remains is exhaustion, anxiety and academic performance that does not match apparent ability.

The RAADS-R asks about the internal cost of compensation rather than the visible behaviour it produces. That is why it surfaces profiles that years of school observation did not.

For students in international schools the pattern is amplified. Frequent moves, changes of curriculum and changes of language make social difficulty easy to attribute to transition, and the underlying profile goes unexamined for years.

Why RAADS-R Administration Requires a Registered Educational Psychologist

A RAADS-R total score means little without the judgement to interpret it. Elevated scores occur in anxiety, in social communication difficulties arising from other causes, and in students whose self-perception has been shaped by years of being told they are different.

Distinguishing those possibilities requires clinical training, and it determines whether the student proceeds to full diagnostic assessment or whether a different explanation is pursued.

Administration also has to account for language. Self-report instruments assume the respondent processes nuanced questions in the language of administration, and interpretation for a student working in a second or third language requires care that automated scoring cannot supply.

Global Education Testing administers and interprets the RAADS-R throughout with HCPC-registered educational psychologists, and autism diagnosis is confirmed by a psychologist authorised to diagnose autism spectrum disorder.

Where autism is under consideration, every Global Education Testing assessment includes the RAADS-R within the complete Gold Standard battery, with domain and total scores reported and interpreted.

Where the RAADS-R indicates that full diagnostic assessment is warranted, the DISCO is administered and the report states the diagnosis against DSM-5-TR and ICD-11 criteria.

The report specifies the examination accommodations the findings support, sets out immediately actionable recommendations for school and home, is delivered within 7 days, and is backed by our Exam Board Acceptance Guarantee.
