The WAIS-IV measures cognitive ability in students aged 18 and over and is the instrument required wherever the evidence is going to a university, a funding body or a professional exam authority.
Adult norms are not optional at this stage. A score referenced against a school-age sample overstates performance and understates impairment, and assessing bodies refuse evidence obtained on the wrong instrument. Administered within the Gold Standard battery, the WAIS-IV supplies the ability baseline against which attainment, processing and attention findings become a diagnosis.
Students who reach university entry, professional admissions testing or Disabled Students’ Allowance are assessed by bodies with their own documentation standards. Those standards specify adult-normed cognitive testing.
Disabled Students’ Allowance requires a full diagnostic assessment conforming to published standards. University disability services apply comparable criteria. College Board Services for Students with Disabilities, the AAMC for the MCAT and LSAC for the LSAT each set their own recency and instrument requirements.
A report presenting childhood cognitive scores is refused at this level regardless of how thorough the original assessment was. The WAIS-IV is what makes the evidence usable.
The WAIS-IV produces a Full Scale IQ alongside four index scores, each derived from separate subtests.
Verbal Comprehension measures acquired verbal knowledge and the capacity to reason with language. Perceptual Reasoning measures non-verbal problem solving and the ability to identify and apply rules to unfamiliar material.
Working Memory measures the capacity to hold information while manipulating it, which is the ability underpinning multi-step instructions, extended reading and examination questions with several components.
Processing Speed measures the rate at which routine visual information is scanned and acted on, under strict time limits.
The WAIS-IV measures four separate cognitive domains and reports each one individually, which is what allows a psychologist to see the differences between them.
Two students can record the same Full Scale IQ of 100 and need entirely different support. The first scores near 100 on all four indexes, and nothing in that profile is diagnostically significant. The second scores 125 on verbal comprehension and perceptual reasoning and 75 on working memory and processing speed.
The second student reasons at a high level but cannot hold information in mind or work at speed, so that reasoning ability rarely reaches the page under timed conditions. This is the profile behind the student who contributes well in seminars and underperforms in examinations, and it is common in dyslexia, in ADHD and in slow processing presentations.
The WAIS-IV separates these two students. The Gold Standard battery reports the General Ability Index, covering verbal comprehension and perceptual reasoning, against the Cognitive Proficiency Index, covering working memory and processing speed. A significant gap between them is among the strongest evidential bases available for extra time, rest breaks and separate accommodation, because it establishes that examination performance under standard conditions does not reflect what the student understands.
A low WAIS-IV Processing Speed Index supports extra time, and it is not the only route to it, which matters because assessing bodies scrutinise the rationale rather than the score.
Complex exam questions require a student to interpret the demand, hold several elements in mind, determine the sequence, retrieve knowledge, organise a response and monitor accuracy. A student with intact processing speed and impaired working memory needs additional time for that composite demand rather than for slow writing.
Reports that assert extra time on processing speed alone are frequently challenged where processing speed is average. The WAIS-IV index structure allows the correct argument to be made and evidenced.
The WAIS-IV establishes cognitive ability, and every other instrument in the battery is interpreted against that baseline. This is what turns a set of scores into a diagnosis.
The WIAT-III measures attainment in reading, writing and mathematics. Where attainment falls significantly below the level WAIS-IV ability predicts, a specific learning disorder is identified. Where attainment sits alongside correspondingly lower ability, the finding is different and so is the support required.
The CTOPP-2 measures phonological processing and rapid naming. Combined with strong WAIS-IV reasoning scores, impaired phonological processing identifies a student who has compensated through effort and memorisation until the volume of work made that unsustainable. This is the standard profile of an adult who was never identified at school.
The MOXO Continuous Performance Test and the DIVA-5 measure attention objectively and through structured clinical interview. Set against WAIS-IV working memory and processing speed scores, these findings separate an attention disorder from limited memory capacity, and the recommendations differ accordingly.
Standardised scores are relative, not absolute. A raw performance is converted into an index score by comparison against a normative sample of the same age.
Comparing an 18-year-old against a school-age sample produces an inflated score, because performance on most cognitive tasks improves through adolescence. Impairment that would be evident against adult norms disappears against childhood ones.
The consequence is practical. Students carrying a childhood report into a university application are frequently told their previous scores fall within the normal range and no adjustment is warranted, when adult-normed testing would establish the opposite.
Verbal comprehension is acquired knowledge and falls in any student still developing the language of instruction. Perceptual reasoning, working memory and processing speed are substantially less affected.
Strong WAIS-IV perceptual reasoning alongside lower verbal comprehension, with phonological processing intact on the CTOPP-2, indicates language exposure rather than impairment. Continued study in the language of instruction resolves it.
Impaired phonological processing and depressed working memory alongside intact reasoning indicates a specific learning disorder, which persists in every language the student speaks and which no amount of language instruction resolves.
