14 Mar How to Tell the Difference Between EAL and ADHD
A student learning in English drifts off in lessons, misses instructions, and cannot sit still. It looks like ADHD. The tell is where the behaviour shows up. ADHD appears everywhere: at home, in the playground, in the student’s first language, in tasks with no language in them at all. Inattention driven by an unfamiliar language appears only where English is the obstacle, and it eases as the English comes.
Why does learning in a new language look like ADHD?
Because a student who cannot fully follow English does what anyone would: stops tracking what they cannot understand, watches other students for cues, and gives up on text-heavy work. Processing a second language all day is tiring, so attention fades by the afternoon. From the front of the room it reads as distraction, restlessness, not listening. It is a language load the student has not yet grown into, not a disorder.
What does ADHD look like, whatever the language?
Attention that breaks down even when the task is easy and in the student’s strongest language. A student with ADHD loses focus on things they understand and even enjoy, not only on hard English work.
The hyperactive and impulsive signs travel too: leaving the seat, blurting answers, unable to wait a turn, restless when nothing about the task is linguistic. The pattern is old, present before the move to an English school, and it shows in more than one place. A new language does not create impulsivity, and it does not follow a student home or into their first language. ADHD does.
How do you tell them apart in a student still learning English?
By looking at attention in more than one setting and more than one language, and by measuring it in a way English cannot distort. Rating scales such as the SNAP-IV 26 and the Conners scales go to parents and teachers, not one classroom, so the question becomes whether the difficulty shows at home and in the first language, not only in English lessons.
The MOXO continuous performance test adds an objective measure of sustained attention with almost no language in it, which is what makes it fair for a bilingual student.
Read against the developmental history, when the signs began and whether ADHD runs in the family, these separate a genuine attention difficulty from the ordinary cost of working in a new language. Attention that is weak only in English, reported only by the English teacher, and improving with time is not ADHD.

What happens if you get it wrong?
Both mistakes are common. A student disengaging from English they cannot follow gets referred for ADHD, and a label, sometimes medication, follows for what was a language gap. Or a student who has ADHD is waved off with “still adjusting” and “it is just the language,” and years pass with no support. The quiet, inattentive student, who does not disrupt, is the one most often missed either way.
