Learning Difficulties in Teenage Years
The teenage years bring a new set of challenges – more complex academics, increasing independence, and the emotional rollercoaster of adolescence. By this stage, many learning issues have been identified, but not all. Some children mask their difficulties until secondary school work overwhelms them. Alternatively, some receive supports in primary school that drop off in high school, revealing that the underlying issues are still very much there.
For instance, dyslexia doesn’t disappear in Year 7. A teenager with dyslexia might manage to read well enough to get by, but you may notice they avoid reading for pleasure, choose subjects without heavy reading or writing loads, or consistently score poorly on exams requiring lots of writing.
Spelling might remain atrocious and written assignments may be notably simpler in vocabulary than their spoken ability would suggest. One teen shared that before her diagnosis at 17, she “survived” by listening intently in class and memorizing facts, but could barely skim her textbook. Such coping mechanisms often crumble when workloads intensify for exams around 16 – 18 years of age including IB, A Level, AP, SAT and iGCSE.
If an older child is extraordinarily resistant to reading or takes far longer on homework than seems normal, it’s worth considering an evaluation even at this late stage.
It’s never too late – schools can still provide accommodations for exams (like a reader or computer assistance, or extra time) if a specific learning disorder is documented. And outside of school, teens can learn strategies like using text-to-speech software or apps that assist with organization and note-taking. Remember that with the right support, dyslexic individuals can and do excel – famous examples include entrepreneur Richard Branson and author Maggie Aderin-Pocock, who turned their dyslexia into a drive to think creatively.
ADHD Signs in Teenage Years
ADHD often persists into adolescence as well, though its presentation may change. The boundlessly hyper little boy may become a restless, impulsive teen who struggles with organization, time management, and risk-taking behaviors. Girls with inattentive ADHD, who may have been quietly overlooked, often hit a wall in secondary school when planning long-term projects or juggling multiple classes becomes too much.
“It wasn’t until A-levels that we realized my daughter wasn’t just scatterbrained – she had ADHD,” one parent says. Signs in teens can include chronic procrastination, extreme disorganization (that locker or backpack that resembles a war zone), forgetfulness (constantly missing deadlines or losing track of assignments), and emotional volatility. These can lead to poor grades, despite the teen’s intelligence.
On the flip side, some adolescents with ADHD channel their hyperactivity into socially acceptable outlets – the fidgety kid becomes the sporty teen always on the move, which can actually help manage symptoms. But difficulties often persist with the more academic or boring tasks. If a teen suddenly starts failing classes or is incessantly glued to their phone (ADHD brains seek stimulation, and social media/gaming can be a quick fix), consider an evaluation.

That’s a classic late ADHD discovery scenario.”
Treatment for teens might involve reintroducing or starting medication, cognitive-behavioral therapy to build organizational skills, and coaching on study strategies. The silver lining is that by understanding their ADHD, teens can tap into their strengths (creativity, energy, hyperfocus on interests) and learn to navigate their challenges, rather than feeling like character failures.
Autism in Adolescents
For autistic adolescents, social and sensory issues can become even more pronounced. The teenage social world – with its unwritten rules, slang, and shifting peer groups – can be a minefield for those who struggle to read between the lines.
A 15-year-old on the spectrum might be academically capable but deeply lonely or anxious at school because they don’t fit in or have been bullied for being “weird.” Mental health problems like anxiety and depression are unfortunately common in autistic teens if they don’t receive adequate support. Key signs of ASD that might only become clear in adolescence include difficulty understanding dating or sarcasm, obsessive interest in a particular hobby to the exclusion of typical teen activities, or extreme distress with changes (like moving to a new classroom schedule).
If you suspect your teen may be on the spectrum but it was never caught, you can still seek a professional assessment. A diagnosis, even in adolescence, can be empowering – it can help the young person understand themselves better and access support (such as a learning support plan at school, counseling, or autism-focused youth groups where they can find community).
It’s also worth noting that some previously diagnosed autistic kids may need extra support navigating teen-specific challenges like transitioning to University or the workforce, where social demands change again. As a parent or caregiver, encouraging open communication, celebrating your teen’s unique strengths, and perhaps connecting with autism advocacy organizations for teens can all make a positive difference.
Learning Difficulties That Emerge in Adolescence
Some learning issues might actually emerge in adolescence simply because the academic tasks now require more advanced processing. Auditory processing issues, for instance, can become more problematic in a secondary school setting where teachers rely on lectures. A student who did fine in earlier years might now struggle to take notes during a fast-paced lesson or misunderstand content in a noisy lab or assembly hall.
Similarly, visual processing difficulties can hinder a teen when tasks involve interpreting graphs, charts, or dense texts. If your teenager says they “just can’t concentrate” when reading textbooks or gets headaches and fatigue from reading, don’t rule out a visual processing component. Sometimes a visit to a behavioral optometrist can identify treatable issues (like convergence insufficiency, which makes reading tiring).
